Last night’s mission was to make some beer bread. This recipe is the most awesome homemade beer bread on the planet. I’ve made it several times in the past, and my unsuspecting guests were surprised when I would tell them it was homemade and not from Tastefully Simple.
Well, since I have run out of TS beer bread mix, I took out this recipe last night to use it. I had emailed the hubster a list of stuff which included self rising flour. Well, when I realized he would not be home in time for us to get dinner on the table at a reasonable hour, I decided to make it from scratch and at least have it baking when he got home.
So, I mix the dry ingredients, go to get a beer, and guess what? Yes, we were out of beer. (we should be arrested for pete’s sake, we are in GERMANY!). Ok, fine, I call him on his cell and luckily he has not left base and can get some.
Please stop scratching your head wondering why I just didn’t go get some myself…the little store in my town is CLOSED on Wed afternoon and it’s the ONLY store in my town. HIS car is dead in my driveway and he has my van. My head would explode trying to find the words in German to try and explain to my neighbors why I was asking for beer for bread, AND I would have been stuck at a neighbors house drinking beer and not getting my bread made. So, I wait.
Then, just at the very moment I know he’s probably more than halfway home, I realize I have no butter. (didn’t think to check that, dah!) There is however margarine.
Warning, warning, warning!!!!
Margarine sucks baked on top of beer bread.
Beer bread REALLY (really) SUCKS if you accidentally use baking SODA instead of baking POWDER. (trust me) It was actually not fit for human OR animal consumption.
Never, ever to my recollection have I ever grabbed baking soda instead of baking powder. Ever.
To make it up to my poor family, tonight I will make 2 loaves for them
Omg I had beer bread gone wrong the other day at well. I ran out, or DD2 didn’t take the last batch out when she said she did and it burned.
Saaadness! I hate it when I spend time thinking, getting hungry for, and eventually making something and it ends up nothing like it was supposed to. Suckage!
Ha ha, I made PB cookies the other day and mid-mixing i decided to double it. I had to back track to double the first ingredients and whooops, I forgot sugar. So i made them with only 1/2 the amount called for. They weren’t terrible, just not quite as sweet as we were used to.
Oh and the lovely timer on my old ghetto oven decided to not go off on the 3rd baking session so they burnt. I thought it was my fault and didn’t set it. The 4th one the entire timer was frozen so they burnt too! Out of a double batch I ended up with less than a single. Oh well.
It happens to us all. Makes me feel better though hearing the other stories
